Zionist Terrorist Army kills 8 Palestinians in two Gaza raids September 26, 2007

Two separate Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip have killed at least eight people, Palestinian officials have said.

Twenty-five Palestinians were also wounded, hospital officials said, in what was the bloodiest day in the Gaza Strip since Israel declared it a “hostile territory”.

An air strike on a car in Gaza City on Wednesday left at least four people dead, while Israeli shelling killed four Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip, witnesses said.

Mortuary officials said those killed in the attack on the car were members of the armed group Army of Islam. The group was involved in the kidnapping of Alan Johnston, a BBC reporter, in March.

An Israeli military spokeswoman confirmed there had been an attack by the air force but had no word on its target.

Meanwhile, Israeli shelling killed four people in the northern town of Beit Hanoun, according to witnesses, and wounded a large number of others.

Israeli operation

Israel said it was responding to ongoing rocket and mortar fire from Gaza at Israeli border towns.

Earlier, Palestinian fighters in Gaza said they have fired more than 12 rockets at the southern Israeli town of Sderot.

Israeli tanks took control of Beit Hanoun, from where some of the rockets had been fired.

Ehud Barak, the Israeli defence minister, said there could soon be a broad military move on Gaza in an attempt to stem the cross-border rocket fire.

“We are getting closer to carrying out a widespread operation in Gaza which, for many reasons, has not taken place in the past weeks,” Barak told Israel’s Army Radio.

Nour Odeh, Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Gaza, said: “Residents of the Gaza Strip are anticipating the worst.”

She said that following Israel’s declaration of Gaza as “hostile territory”, “people are perceiving these air strikes and incursions as a translation of that declaration”

Iran launches scathing attack on US September 26, 2007

Iran’s president has launched a blistering attack on the US and the UN Security Council, but says his country is ready for constructive talks with anyone.

In his speech to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also said the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme was “closed” and a matter to be handled by the UN nuclear watchdog.

Ahmadinejad accused Washington of arrogance and human rights abuses, speaking at the same spot where his American counterpart, George Bush had earlier spoken of the primacy of human rights and freedom.

Without specifically naming them by name, Ahmadinejad said Washington and its allies had been had bullying Iran - who they accuse of trying to develop nuclear weapons - and pressing the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“Fortunately, the IAEA has recently tried to regain its legal role as supporter of the rights of its members while supervising nuclear activities,” Ahmadinejad said.

“Today, because of the resistance of the Iranian nation, the issue is back to the agency, and I officially announce that in our opinion, the nuclear issue of Iran is now closed and has turned into an ordinary agency matter,” he said.

“Of course Iran has always been and will be prepared to have constructive talks with all parties,” he added.

In a 40-minute speech, the Iranian leader went on to accuse Washington of human rights abuses in its “war on terror” with allusions to CIA imprisonment and interrogation programmes in foreign countries, and detention in camps such as Guantanamo Bay.

“Unfortunately human rights are being extensively violated by certain powers, especially by those who pretend to be their exclusive advocates,” Ahmadinejad said.

“Setting up secret prisons, abducting persons, trials and secret punishments without any regard to due process, extensive tapping of telephone conversations intercepting private mail … have become commonplace and prevalent,” he added.

He also criticised the US-led invasion of Iraq, which he said was “occupied under the pretext of overthrowing the dictator and the existence of weapons of mass destruction”.

“Unfortunately, we are witnessing the bitter truth that some powers do not value some nations or human beings and the only things that matter to them are themselves, their political parties and their groups.

“In their view, human rights are tantamount to profits for their companies and their friends. The rights and dignity of the American people are also being sacrificed for the selfish desires of those holding power,” he added.

US silent

But the US delegation was not in the chamber to hear the criticism.

And Bush gave no more than a passing mention to Iran in his speech earlier, even though his administration is calling for stronger sanctions against Tehran.

In fact, Bush’s address was notable for what he did not say - barely a mention of Iraq either, where the US is seeking greater UN input.

Like the US, the Israeli delegation did not stay to hear Ahmadinejad’s speech as the Iranian president also blasted Israel as an “illegal Zionist regime”.

“For more than 60 years, Palestine, as compensation for the loss they [Jews] incurred during the war in Europe, has been under occupation of the illegal Zionist regime.

“The Palestinian people have been displaced or are under heavy military pressure, economic siege or are incarcerated under abhorrent conditions.

“The occupiers are protected and praised, while the innocent Palestinians are subjected to political, military and propaganda onslaughts.

“The people of Palestine are deprived of water, electricity and medicine for the sin of asking for freedom, and the government that was freely elected by the people is targeted,” he said.

The Iranian leader also criticised the UN Security Council for being an exclusive club answerable to no one.

He said members of the club were the aggressors in war – Iraq – or failed to stop aggression in war, referring to Lebanon.

Warning that those in power were in the “sunset of their times”, he urged them to “leave the path of arrogance and Satan, to that of God”.

“This means moving to purity, honesty, justice, and respecting human dignity.”

Iran calls US the real threat September 26, 2007

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, has accused the US of being the real threat as he came under fire for his country’s nuclear programme.

He told the UN General Assembly on Tuesday: “Human rights are being extensively violated by certain powers, especially by those who pretend to be their exclusive advocates.

“Setting up secret prisons, abducting persons, trials and secret punishments without any regard to due process, extensive tapping of telephone conversations.”

Undeterred, France and Germany increased pressure on the Islamic republic at the General Assembly’s annual ministerial meeting on Tuesday, saying they would not accept a nuclear-armed Iran.

“Let’s not fool ourselves. If Iran were to acquire the nuclear bomb, the consequences would be disastrous,” Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, told the session.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, piled further pressure on Tehran.

He said: “Iran is entitled to nuclear power for civilian purposes, but to allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapon is an unacceptable risk to the stability of the region and the stability of the world.”

George Bush’s address was focused on the spread of freedom, but there was barely a mention of Iraq, where the US is seeking UN assistance.

Bush hardly mentioned Iran, where the US is calling for stronger sanctions.

He said: “Every civilised nation also has a responsibility to stand up for the people suffering under dictatorship.

“In Belarus, North Korea, Syria, and Iran, brutal regimes deny their people the fundamental rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration.”

Bush got a smile from the Sudanese ambassador to the UN when he described the crisis in Darfur as genocide, and touted his country’s bn contribution towards humanitarian and peacekeeping efforts there.

Bush mentioned the efforts of Sarkozy to stop the Darfur conflict from spreading.

With Hugo Chavez, Venezuela’s  president, not attending this year’s General Assembly, Daniel Ortega, the Nicaraguan president, took on the role of challenging the Western powers for Latin America.

“With what authority do they condemn the people of Iran who are working for the development of peaceful nuclear energy? But they have decided it is not for peaceful purposes. But who gave them the right?”

The speeches continue on Wednesday with the president of Iraq, and the foreign minister of Venezuela.

Iranian President Delivers Memorable Speech at US University September 25, 2007

Iran’s President said in his speech at the US Columbia University on Monday that certain of the so-called big powers resorting to a tactics of bullying and force, have virtually barred thinkers from the scene in a bid to prevent the exposure of facts that would be scandalous for these powers. Dr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressing a huge gathering of academics said it is shameful that laws are coined to prevent conducting of research on certain historical events, while researchers who take the courage to probe the facts are convicted, fined and sentenced to prison terms.

To cheers and thunderous handclapping from the huge gathering he deplored that certain world powers have monopolized science and even oppose the scientific progress of others.

The Iranian President said it is rather strange that in this modern era certain powers are so intolerant of the progress of other nations that they obstruct scientific developments under a variety of baseless pretexts, accusations as well as political and economic pressures.

He stressed that such behaviour is because of their growing distance from humanitarian and ethical values and the paths so brilliantly blazed out by divine prophets.

Dr. Ahmadinejad considered the manipulation of science by the immoral and the unprincipled as an oppression of mankind, adding that bullying powers should not be allowed to exploit science to serve their anti-human interests and to restrict the realms of research.

He pointed out that in today’s world, bullying powers are using science and certain scientists to loot nations and to scuttle opportunities.

These powers, added the Iranian president, are exploit science as a tool to deceive nations in order to justify their misconduct; to foment fear and insecurity, and create hypothetical enemies for the nations on the pretext of the so-called war on terror.

After his resounding speech, Dr. Ahmadinejad fielded questions from the audience including academics and reporters on such crucial issues as Iran’s inalienable right continue its peaceful nuclear activities, the misconstrued policies of the US regime that has created chaos around the world, on the myth of the holocaust and the rights of the Palestinians to freedom without the need any longer in the region for the illegal existence of the usurper state of Israel.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad urged Western media Monday afternoon not to tell lies about Iran and come to see closely the existing situation in the country.

Speaking to the Washington-based US National Press Club in a video-conference from New York, the Iranian president said, “Iranians are the freest and the most intellectual nation in the world and are well informed of the daily news.”

“Those who claim there is no freedom in Iran should visit the country and freely talk to the people” so they could get a better understanding of the situation, said President Ahmadinejad who is here to address the United Nations General Assembly later on Tuesday.

Referring to the heavy burden carried by the mass media in the contemporary world, the president said, “Giving false information about Iran is far beyond the responsibility of mass media.” As for women’s status in Iran, President Ahmadinejad said, “Iranian women are freest in the world and engaged in different scientific, social, media, political and artistic activities.

“Women contribute to 60 percent of Iran’s university students and win medals at the international sports fields,” the president stressed.

Commenting on the issue of Iraq, he said that US wrong policies in the war-ravaged country have led to failure of US army operations in Iraq.

As for Israel, President Ahmadinejad reiterated that Iran “will not recognize the Zionist regime as it was established based on occupation, racism and threats.”
“Why those who work in media do not protest to the Zionist regime for killing people and displacing them?” asked the president.

He further said Iran was opposed to the way that US dealt with the world.

“We are opposed to the way the US is managing the world considering it a wrong approach leading to war, discrimination and bloodshed,” President Ahmadinejad stressed.

Islamophobia shatters hypocritical democracy of the West September 22, 2007

UN’s special rapporteur on racism, Doudou Diene, delivered a report last week in which he highlighted the growing Islamophobia in the world. The official claimed that anti-Islamic sentiments could be seen in many European countries. Such a statement seems to be rather surprising on the one hand. The European community is known for its propaganda of democracy, tolerance and the protection of human rights. However, reality may often prove the opposite. In general, it has already become a tendency for weakening Western cultures to come into confrontations with Islam.

The problem is not new. The Arab expansion was restrained on the Pyrenees, Western Christians organized crusades whereas the Ottoman empire made numerous attempts to expand its European borders. History shows that Europe managed to avoid the influence of Islam. However, the current situation has changed drastically. It is extremely hard for Europeans to find a common language with non-European cultures in spite of the fact that one of Europe’s basic values celebrates the equality of all humans.

It is not ruled out that a public campaign organized by authorities will prove that the level of crimes among Muslim immigrants is not that hard as it seems to be. The current state of affairs speaks of the opposite. Politicians follow the voice of the public trying to prevent xenophobic sentiments. However, if this issue can bring more votes then it is very hard for them to resist the temptation.

There is another problem. The number of Europeans who convert to Islam and get involved into terrorist activities has been growing recently. As a rule, people have the perception of terrorists as individuals of completely different mindset and culture. However, an attack may now come from the people who look and act like everyone else in this or that country. News agencies often report of natives of Britain, Germany, Denmark and other countries who converted to Islam and later were charged with terrorist activities.

This phenomenon may indicate another weak point of the Western civilization. It is very hard for many people to find themselves in the modern world of undermined social links. Islam is a tradition-oriented religion, which offers quite simply answers to people.

It seemed only a short while ago that democratic rules of the game would give an opportunity to eventually find a decision. On the other hand, the voice of the people of Europe does not speak of their own tolerance. For example, Switzerland plans to hold a referendum to ban the construction of mosques. Most likely, the politicians of this liberal country will not dare to cast the results of this referendum into question.

The West has a huge problem with the issue of human tolerance, but Western leaders prefer to turn a blind eye on the problem.

Iran says ready to strike back if attacked by Israel September 20, 2007

Iran has drawn up plans for retaliation in the event of an attack from Israel, the deputy commander of the Iranian Air Force was reported by Fars news agency as saying on Wednesday.

Gen. Mohammad Alavi said Iran has missiles that can reach Israeli territory, while Israel is not in a position to pose a serious threat to Iran.

He also dismissed reports in Western media suggesting that pinpoint air strikes could be delivered against Iran, neutralizing the country’s Air Force with surprise attacks.

“We are ready to stand up to any attack and will not allow enemy bombers to carry out such strikes,” Alavi said.

He also said that Iran’s radars are monitoring activities near its borders around the clock, and that the country has the capability to counter cruise missiles.

Iran has successfully tested Shahab-2 and Shahab-3 long-range ballistic missiles, as well as Scud-B, Fateh-110 and other missiles.

The country is believed to have one of the largest ballistic missile forces in the developing world, and is reportedly running an ambitious missile development program. Many countries also suspect it of developing nuclear weapons through its uranium enrichment program.

Iran warns missile attacks on US targets September 18, 2007

A senior commander of the Revolutionary Guard, the largest component of the Islamic republic’s armed forces, chose this moment to outline the capability of his country’s ballistic missiles.

The Shahab-3 rocket has a range of 1,250 miles, allowing it to strike an array of Western targets across the Middle East.

“Today the Americans are around our country but this does not mean that they are encircling us. They are encircled themselves and are within our range,” said Gen Mohammed Hassan Koussechi.

“If the United States is saying that they have identified 2,000 targets in Iran, then what is certain is that it is the Americans who are all around Iran and are equally our targets,” he told the official IRNA news agency.

Gen Koussechi added: “We have reached capacities that allow us to hit the enemy at a range of 2,000 kilometres.”

A wide array of possible targets faces Iran across the Gulf. Dubai, filled with Western companies, tourists and expatriates, is only 105 miles away.

Iran’s armed forces already occupy Abu Musa, an island claimed by the United Arab Emirates, 40 miles from Dubai.

Other potential targets include the oilfields in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern province, the headquarters of America’s Central Command in Qatar and the main harbour of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus is also in range.
